The Frank E. Rader Southeast Regional wrestling tournament took place this past weekend and as always attracted some of the best wrestlers from not only the southeast region of the United States but wrestlers from all over came to take part in this event. 17 states were represented in this event, even states as far away as Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. This was the last Fargo qualifier with the top 6 wrestlers qualifying. Since this is a Georgia Wrestling site we will only be discussing and recapping our home grown Ga wrestlers who finished in the top 6 in their weight classes.
You can find a quick recap of the 16U weight class below. If there is no recap for a weight class it is because no Ga wrestler placed in that weight class.
16U Recap:
16U boys FS 88 lb weight class: This weight class was a 4 man round robin bracket with 1 Ga wrestler competing.
Ariah Mills went 3-0 on his way to a dominant performance and a gold medal. He teched all three of his opponents and never surrendered a single point.
16U boys FS 94 lb weight class: This weight class was a 2 man best of 3 bracket. Derik Kiefer won both matches, the first by pin and the second by tech. His opponent from VA did not seem to give him too many problems.
16U boys FS 100 lb weight class: This weight class was a 16 man double elimination bracket with 4 Ga wrestlers competing.
Cody Clarke was the number 1 seed for good reason. Clarke went 4-0 on the day and never really seemed to be challenged much on his way to the winners circle. He teched all four of his opponents.
Cooper McArthur was the number 2 seed but fell in the quarter finals to the 7 seed Aston from Ga. He seemed to have a good rhythm going cruising through the consolation bracket when he ran into a buzz saw in the conso semis against an Oklahoma boy. McArthur finished 5-2 on the day which was good enough for 5th place.
Ryland Aston went 2-0 in the championship side of the bracket until falling to Phelan of FL in the semis, dropping him into the consolation bracket. After the semis loss he injury defaulted the rest of the tournament putting him in 6th place.
16U boys FS 106 lb weight class: This weight class was a 32 man double elimination bracket with 6 Ga wrestlers competing.
Teequavious Mills put on an impressive performance this past weekend on his way to a gold medal. The number 2 seed finished the tournament with a 5-0 record, finishing the day beating the number 1 seed from TN in the finals. The Mills boys continue to be a dominant force in not only Ga but the entire region.
Christopher Metz was the number 3 seed going into the day and finished his tournament in 4th place. He lost in the quarter finals to an unseeded wrestler from AL by 1 point, wrestled his way through the consolation side of the bracket only to come up just short in the conso finals against the same kid from AL that had beaten him earlier that day.
Joseph Austin finished his day with a 3-3 record which was good enough for 6th place in this weight class.
16U boys 120 lb weight class: This weight class was a 32 man double elimination bracket with 7 Ga wrestlers competing.
Tanner Hunt was the number 1 seed for this weight class and for good reason. Hunt either teched of pinned his way through the tournament with a 5-0 record. Hunt looked unstoppable on his way to a gold medal.
Ty Valenzuela came in as the number 3 seed and for the first three rounds he looked like a man on a mission. He lost to a PA product in the semi finals and never seemed to quite get back on track. Dropping the next two matches which gave him a 3-3 record on the day, just good enough for 6th place.
16U boys 138 lb weight class: This weight class was a 32 man double elimination bracket with 5 Ga wrestlers competing.
James Sievers is a young up and coming stud in Ga wrestling, he was the number 1 seed and until this weekend, I had never seen anyone really push him and challenge the young Social Circle product. As expected Sievers made easy work of his opponents all the way into the finals. An unseeded FL wrestler, Armand Williams, beat him 10-0. Sievers finished his day with a 4-1 record and a silver medal.
16U boys 144 lb weight class: This weight class was a 32 man double elimination bracket with 4 Ga wrestlers competing.
Jin Davis, the number 6 seed, finished his day with a 3-3 record which was good enough for 6th place and a trip to Fargo. Davis fell in the quarters to the number 3 seed Puckett from TN, wrestled his way back through the consolation bracket only to lose 2 straight once he got to the conso semis.
16U boys 157 lb weight class: This weight class was a 32 man double elimination bracket with 2 Ga wrestlers competing.
Callum McCormack finished his day in 5th place, which is fairly impressive when you know that he dropped his very first match of the day, to eventual champion Norman from TN, and had to wrestle all the way back through the consolation bracket. After that first loss McCormack seemed to be a man on a mission and won 4 in a row before losing in the conso semis. He finished with a 5-2 record.
16U boys 165 lb weight class: This weight class was a 32 man double elimination bracket with 4 Ga wrestlers competing.
Jake Rheaume finished his day in 3rd place overall. The numbers 3 seed cruised his way through the brackets before getting hammered by the number 2 seed in the semi finals. In the consolation side of the bracket he would not lose again finishing up the day with a 5-1 record.
Timothy Brown III, was the number 4 seed in this weight class. He finished his day with a 4-2 record taking a very similar path as Rheaume. Brown III lost to Rheaume in the conso finals, which put him in 4th place overall for the day.
16U boys 175 lb weight class: This weight class was a 16 man double elimination bracket with 2 Ga wrestlers competing.
Dylan Reel is a hammer and is becoming a force to reckon with in our great state. The number 1 seed showed his dominance once again this weekend with 2 techs and 2 falls on his way to the winners circle and a gold medal.
Rolando Gonzalez was the number 5 seed and finished up his day in 6th place overall with a 2-3 record on the day. Falling to Reel in the semis, Gonzalez had to forfeit the rest of his matches for the tournament.
16U boys 190 lb weight class: This weight class was a 16 man double elimination bracket with 4 Ga wrestlers competing.
Ronan An went 3-1 on the day and earned a silver medal in the process. The number 1 seed made quick work of his quarter finals and semi finals opponents before dropping a close match in the finals to the number 3 seed Boyle from OH.
16U boys 215 lb weight class: This weight class was a 16 man double elimination bracket with 4 Ga wrestlers competing.
Zane Taliaferro was the number 1 seed going into the tournament this weekend. Taliaferro cruised into the semi finals with a bye and 2 straight pins. He lost to SC product and eventual champion Robinson. Taliaferro finished the tournament in 4th place overall.
Codey Dean came in as the number 4 seed but fell in the first round of 16. He was able to wrestle his way back through the consolation bracket and finished in 6th place overall with a 2-3 record.
16U boys 285 lb weight class: This weight class was an 8 man double elimination bracket with 3 Ga wrestlers competing.
Hunter Baker had a tough draw as he drew the number 1 seed and eventual champion in the first round. Baker wrestled back through and finished the day with a 2-2 record which was good enough for 4th place.
Joshua Modenou also lost in round 1 and fought his way back into the conso semis where he lost to Thomas from AL. Modenou finished in 5th place with a 1-2 record.
Henry Jones finished this bracket in 6th place overall.
